UGR researchers design an interactive system for people with autism

Scientists from the UGR have designed a communication system that allows people with autism interact with their environment through computers or mobile devices such as phones, Iphone or Ipod

The research group specification, software development and evolution (GEDES) at the University of Granada has designed a communication system that allows people with autism or other special needs relate to their environment through mobile devices such as computers or phones, Iphone or Ipod. The new system will operate via sensors placed in the home or school, to which users send information through these devices, reports Andalucía Innova.

From the School of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University of Granada, this group initiated the project several years ago Sc @ ut communicators to develop for people with communication problems such as autism, which contribute to improved interaction capabilities and planning and help them in social relations. GEDES Group Experience in the design of these devices supports the creation of new instruments, in which the main function will never be the media, but the interaction with the environment that enables users to perform certain activities.

In this sense, the director of GEDES, María José Rodríguez Fortiz, says the aim is to adapt the home or in educational centers that develops the activities of such persons with special needs in these new mobile devices. Users can, for example, open or close windows or doors through the device that sends a signal to sensors installed in the dwelling.

But the ultimate aim is to go further and that the central computer that controls the actions have a logic that helps these people in making decisions, in addition to warning if it detects any abnormality. The first prototype is being developed and testing will be performed in some schools in the province although, as with the communicators, the researcher pointed out that the adaptations will emerge from the implementation. "They are the victims and their families and caregivers who help us to improve the shortcomings of the product as it moves closer to their needs," notes the charge of the work.

The researcher noted that in the medium term, aim to advance the possibilities of mass media with the environment, incorporating different constants biosensors to monitor the agency with which the device itself can run ads when you register data does not match the standard pattern. For example, you could control the time an individual takes to climb a ladder and analyze their constant during that activity, so that if, at the time when you're alone and perform the action, the sensor registers a different data automatically communicate to an emergency center that something is happening. "This type of device has the ultimate objective, as in his time had the Sc @ ut communicators, provide individuals with special needs greater autonomy and comfort to their families", adds Maria Jose Rodriguez.

In addition, another objective of the group's work is to support teachers to design learning exercises, and teaching units that are carried out individually or cooperatively by a group of students interconnected. One group of researchers, Alvaro Fernandez Lopez, is developing a program called PICA, iPod Touch and iPhone, which offers several types of exercises: puzzles, associations or joint exploration elements of multimedia. Exercises can be customized to suit the wants and abilities of pupils with special educational needs.
