A video game reduces the symptoms of attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity (AD/HD)

Friday, January 8, 2010

Experts from the University of Hertfordshire (UK) have developed a computer game that reduces the symptoms of attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (AD/HD), and will be applied to children in the country this month.

Specifically, the labor director, Karen Pine, and his assistant, Farjana Nasrin, investigated the effects of "feedback electroencephalography," in ten children, a learning strategy that detects brain waves.

This is an application that involves the child in an educational computer game, and where he has to wear a helmet that captures their brain activity on the attention. This game runs during the child's attention and, however, stops when the child no longer pays attention to the game.

The experts noted at the end of the study that the impulsive behavior of children was reduced compared with control group children who had not used the system.

According to Pine said, "children with ADHD have difficulty controlling their impulses and inhibit inappropriate behavior. "This system could prevent long-term problems to help children become less impulsive and more controlled," he said.

For its part, the director of Games for Life, Ian Glasscock, an entity with which assist these experts said that the technology of educational games aimed at the mind is the only intervention that has demonstrated efficacy in reducing the symptoms of this disorder .
